LIVESTREAM | Before First Class: The "Firsts" That Paved the Way
Click here to attend: [https://www.jgoot.com/livestreams](https://www.jgoot.com/livestreams) Some people see first class and assume it starts there. The seat. The lounge. The upgrade. The luxury hotel. You get the idea. The mistake is thinking those experiences begin with money, luck, or status. They don’t. In this special session, JGOOT Founder Joel McDonald shares the many early steps, smart moves, mindset shifts, and lessons that helped create the first-class way of travel he enjoys today. Because the truth is: Premium travel is often built long before the trip ever happens. It’s time for: **Before First Class: The “Firsts” That Paved the Way** Joel will walk through the key moments that shaped his travel journey, the decisions that compounded over time, and the strategies everyday travelers can learn and apply for themselves. Inside this session, you’ll learn: • The early moves that matter more than flashy redemptions • How small decisions can compound into premium travel experiences • What most travelers misunderstand about how luxury travel is built • The mindset shifts that create long-term leverage • How to begin building your own version now This isn’t about copying someone else’s lifestyle. It’s not about chasing a lucky one-time trip. It’s about understanding the steps that create repeatable results. And when you learn those steps, first class stops feeling far away. Happy BDay GRASP - at Andy's Pizza
Happy BDay GRASP - at Andy's Pizza
GRASP started on April 27, 2022 - exactly 4 years to the day and at this very location! (formerly Mod Pizza) Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate our community and see friends old and new while enjoying pizza that has become quite a hit in the DMV area! Andy's serves pizza by the slice and also wine by the glass or bottle. Two slices of pizza and a coke cost about $12. It all started with a ball of Trader Joe’s pizza dough. Over nearly a decade, Andy Brown has refined his recipe from semihomemade to a from-scratch crust that ferments for 72 hours before it’s baked in a hot stone oven. This location, in Kentlands, is the newest but Andy’s is quickly mushrooming around DC and NoVA. With its pliable crust, tangy tomatoes, and high-quality cheese, this is one of the most awarded pizzas in the DMV.

Late Morning Hikers-Washington Outdoor Adventures Take Hogback Mountain!
Late Morning Hikers-Washington Outdoor Adventures Take Hogback Mountain!
What’s better than summiting a mountain with your favorite hiking group? Doing it with two hiking groups! Late Morning Hikers and Washington Outdoor Adventures are combining forces on a hike up Shenandoah’s scenic Hogback Mountain. This hike features sweeping views of the Shenandoah Valley and moderately strenuous elevation. We’ll approach the summit from two directions and meet at the top for a shared lunch break and to enjoy the view. From there, folks can make it an out-and-back to return to their cars, or continue straight and carpool back with a new group. **Here’s how it will work:** Both groups will meet at the Vienna metro station, which has free parking, and divide up to carpool to two starting points (Neighbor Mountain Access Trail or Appalachian National Scenic Trail Parking – see locations below). We’ll have roughly equal numbers of hikers go to each starting point, and we won’t be strictly divided between LMH/WOA. After we meet for lunch, hikers can head back the way they came or continue along the trail. Hike leaders will return to their cars to shuttle folks as needed. After, we will meet up at 4Js Farm & Brewery near Warrenton for food and beverages. **🕒 Estimated hike time: \~6–7 hours at a moderate group pace** **📍Day of the Event:** * Meet at the Vienna Metro Parking Area * 🕙 Arrival: 8:00 AM 🚗 Departure: 8:15 AM * We’ll organize carpools on-site or in advance via Meetup comments. * 🚙 Estimated drive time: 1 hr 30 mins. **✅What to Bring:** * 💧2–3 liters of water * ⚡Electrolytes (Gatorade, Powerade, etc.) * 🍫Snacks * 📸Camera * 🥾Comfortable hiking shoes * 🧥Weather-appropriate layers **🚗 Carpool & Parking Info:** * 💰Suggested carpool fee: $15.00/person * 💵Park Entrance fee: $30/vehicle (Free with Shenandoah or America The Beautiful Park Passes) * 👥Group size limit: 15 members. * **Note: Please sign up only once if you are a member of both Meetup groups!** 📍Directions: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/1DPjNvzFNx9cU4nk6](https://maps.app.goo.gl/1DPjNvzFNx9cU4nk6) 🌧️ The event will be canceled in case of poor weather **🗺️Trail & Weather:** 🗺️Map: [[https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/lmh-woa-combined-day-hike-d6bc793?u=i&sh=lfbxds](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/lmh-woa-combined-day-hike-d6bc793?u=i&sh=lfbxds) ](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/lmh-woa-combined-day-hike-d6bc793?u=i&sh=lfbxds) 🌤️Forecast: [[https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/va/sperryville](https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/va/sperryville) ](https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/va/sperryville) **🍻Post-Hike Social:** After the hike, we’ll head to [4Js Farm & Brewery](https://www.4jsfarmbrewery.com/) for food and drinks. **📝 RSVP Details:** * **✅RSVPs open April 2 at 12 PM** * **⏰Closes: Friday, May 1 at 7 PM** CARPOOLING: We encourage those with cars to carpool with others - you're the ones who make LMH great! VMO: “Pocahontas!” (Allegheny Trail, Sec 3) (~70 Miles)
VMO: “Pocahontas!” (Allegheny Trail, Sec 3) (~70 Miles)
Have you ever wanted to ***really*** immerse yourself in Pocahontas County, West Virginia? Here is your chance! Last Memorial Day Weekend, DC UL hiked a section of the Allegheny Trail (“ALT”) from Blackwater Falls to Durbin. Let’s knock out the next section this year: Durbin to Sherwood Lake. This section of the trail bisects most of Pocahontas County. Expect wet feet, regular ascents and descents, 4k feet of *daily* elevation change over 4 days, big miles, and very remote hiking. You must be in solid “Veteran Member” status for this one. In addition to this being a physically tough trek, it is at times tough to follow navigationally. The reward? When co-workers talk about Pocahontas around the water cooler, you’ll be able to say confidently, “***do I know*** Pocahontas County!" This section looks much harder than the one we hiked last year—hopefully, it will be just as funny. [Here is the trip report from that adventure](https://dculbackpacking.com/2025/05/29/trip-report-this-trail-has-everything-allegheny-trail-section-2-blackwater-falls-sp-to-durbin-west-virginia-may-22-26-2025-73-miles/): https://dculbackpacking.com/2025/05/29/trip-report-this-trail-has-everything-allegheny-trail-section-2-blackwater-falls-sp-to-durbin-west-virginia-may-22-26-2025-73-miles/ (For those of you who missed out on the Blackwater-Durbin section, and who want to someday hike the entire ALT, I’ll redo that section on a future trip). **The Plan** Friday: We’ll carpool at 3:00 p.m. from the Vienna Metro to Trainer, WV to leave a car or two. Then, we’ll drive to Durbin, WV to camp at a campground in town. Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday: We’ll hike SB on the ALT with tentative splits of 20, 19, 14, 16 miles. There may be a restaurant opportunity in Cass for Saturday evening. We pass a gas station convenience store on Monday, but it may be closed on Memorial Day. On Tuesday we may go for swim in Sherwood Lake before reversing the shuttle. We’ll have lunch at Station2 restaurant in Durbin before we drive home. **IMPORTANT: YOU NEED TO TAKE A HALF DAY LEAVE ON FRIDAY AND ALL DAY LEAVE ON TUESDAY (I’M ASSUMING YOU ALSO HAVE MEMORIAL DAY OFF).** I set the group size at 5 to make the shuttle work. I can expand it if we get enough drivers, so join the wait list if interested. I’m limiting this trip to Veteran Members. DC ULers have maps! [Everyone should use the FarOut app for this one](https://faroutguides.com/allegheny-trail-map/), with the maps downloaded. The trail is tough to follow and is often rerouted. FarOut is the most accurate line. https://faroutguides.com/allegheny-trail-map/ [Here is a Google Maps version](https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1VRr0rrSWM4sSTA5B_1bHqolLzLfcmzAZ&ll=37.84614715940329%2C-80.22346559843282&z=8): https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1VRr0rrSWM4sSTA5B_1bHqolLzLfcmzAZ&ll=37.84614715940329%2C-80.22346559843282&z=8 [You can buy maps to print here](https://www.hikethealleghenytrail.org/new-page): https://www.hikethealleghenytrail.org/new-page \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-**THE IMPORTANT WARNINGS**\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- I’m just a co-participant on this trip, not a guide or an expert. I’ve been hiking with DCUL since 2017 but have no special training, such as organizational, medical, or navigational.
You are officially on the trip if you both RSVP on Meetup, we engage by email, text, or the app, and you meet me at the trailhead. Dolly Sods - Spring Backpacking - 16 miles
**IMPORTANT - READ** This is a by law 10 person limit capacity trip, If you are NOT 100% committed please do NOT RSV **Rain - Shine or Snow is a go** This time we will be visiting the North area; The Dolly Sods Wilderness — originally simply Dolly Sods — is a U.S. Wilderness Area in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia and is part of the Monongahela National Forest (MNF) and one of the most desirable trekking areas for the free bird and adventure spirit. Dolly Sods is a rocky, high-altitude plateau with sweeping vistas and lifeforms normally found much farther north in Canada. To the north, the distinctive landscape of "the Sods" is characterized by stunted (“flagged”) trees, wind-carved boulders, heath barrens, grassy meadows created in the last century by logging and fires, and sphagnum bogs that are much older.
