2nd Novel: Eradication: A Fable by Jonathan Miles
2nd Novel: Eradication: A Fable by Jonathan Miles
Called an "instant classic" by the Washington Post, Miles transports readers to a remote, windswept island where a high-stakes ecological experiment is spiraling into a **blackly comic nightmare**. The mission: to eliminate an invasive species of goats that threatens the local ecosystem. But as the isolation sets in and the moral lines blur, the human inhabitants find themselves caught in a "fist-gnawing comedy of errors" that questions the very ethics of playing God. Described by critics as **"basically, *Hamlet* but with goats,"** this slim yet virtuosic novel is a masterclass in tone, pivoting effortlessly from bumbling absurdity to profound moral terror. It is a biting, witty, and deeply philosophical fable about the precariousness of our world and the ghosts of the choices we make. **“An instant classic.” —*The Washington Pos*t • “Excellent ” —*The New York Times* • “Urgent and lyrical.” —NPR**

External Event: Wild Edibles: Late Spring Plants with Nick Spero
🌿 Wild Edibles: Late Spring Foraging Walk (NHSM Program) Have you ever wondered what edible plants grow quietly around us in Maryland forests? Join members of our group for a guided **wild edible plant walk** hosted by the Natural History Society of Maryland. We’ll be attending **Wild Edibles: Late Spring Plants**, a field program led by experienced forager Nick Spero. During the walk, participants will learn how to identify edible plants that emerge in Maryland’s woods during late spring. Along the way, instructor Nick Spero will discuss safe identification, ethical harvesting practices, and how these plants have traditionally been used for food and flavor. Species often discussed include **wild ginger, ramps, spicebush**, and other seasonal plants that grow in our region. The program is designed as a relaxed **nature exploration with discussion and plant identification along the trail**. Expect light to moderate hiking, frequent stops to observe plants up close, and plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn from the landscape. More details about the program can be found here: [https://www.marylandnature.org/get-involved/events/event/wild-edibles-late-spring-plants-with-nick-spero-2/](https://www.marylandnature.org/get-involved/events/event/wild-edibles-late-spring-plants-with-nick-spero-2/) — 🥾 Difficulty — Easy to moderate walking with frequent stops for plant identification and discussion. — 💲 Cost — This is a **paid program organized by the Natural History Society of Maryland**. • Non‑NHSM Member — **$45** • NHSM Member — **$35** — 📍 Location — The exact meeting location is not listed unless you register for the event. In general, the event is Northeast of Baltimore and about an hour from Shady Groove Metro. — 📝 Registration — Members who plan to attend should **RSVP here on Meetup and also register directly with the Natural History Society of Maryland through their website**. Participants will **pay NHSM directly** when registering for the program. — 🎒 What to Bring — Based on the Natural History Society of Maryland's recommendations for this program: • Weather‑appropriate clothing (layers work best) • Sturdy closed‑toe hiking shoes or boots with good traction • Water and snacks • Sun protection such as sunblock and a hat • Bug spray if desired • Optional: a camera, guidebook, binoculars, or a small magnifying lens for examining plants These items help ensure everyone is comfortable during the walk and able to closely observe the plants we encounter along the trail. — 🚗 Carpooling — Once the location is confirmed, we can **coordinate optional carpooling through the Meetup event page** for anyone interested in sharing a ride. This should be a great opportunity to **learn about native plants, explore the landscape together, and deepen our understanding of the food that grows around us**.

SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: Exploring the Deep Sea
SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: Exploring the Deep Sea
**This talk is completely sold out in advance and no door tickets will be available. You must have purchased a ticket to be admitted.** [Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Exploring the Deep Sea,”** a scholarly dive into an enormous and little-understood ecosystem, with Melissa Betters, deep ocean explorer and deep-sea biologist at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-deep-sea](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-deep-sea) .] If you’re afraid of the deepest, darkest reaches of the ocean, you aren’t alone. For centuries, humans have imagined the ocean’s depths to be inhabited by all manner of monsters, from the Kraken to Godzilla. But what is the cost of viewing over 70% of our planet with fear and aversion? Who benefits from that? Come to see the deep sea as far more worthy of fascination than fear with the help of Dr. Melissa Betters, a biologist and marine ecosystem researcher who has made nine trips to the bottom of the ocean and taught at Bryn Mawr College and Temple University. She’ll take you on a scholarly exploration of various deep-sea ecosystems around the world such as deep coral reefs and boiling-hot hydrothermal vents. We’ll get to know some of the deep ocean’s captivating biodiversity, examining where it lives, what it does, and why it matters to us. With her help you’ll come to see the deep ocean as a tapestry of different environments, each of which host their own forms of life and present their own suite of ecological challenges. Importantly, we’ll also look at how the deep ocean is portrayed in both myth and media, considering how our perceptions are skewed by the rhetoric used to describe it and the images used to depict it. Despite appearing far-removed and out of reach, the deep ocean is still a part of our planet, subject to all the same challenges and human impacts as life on land. The final part of this talk will examine the variety of human impacts affecting the deep ocean and actions we can take to protect Earth’s final frontier. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.) Bird-Themed Trivia, Networking, and Socializing at NVBA HQ
Bird-Themed Trivia, Networking, and Socializing at NVBA HQ
Join NVBA and come prepared to test your knowledge and quick thinking at a bird-themed trivia night, hosted by NextGen Birders for Conservation at the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance HQ! Even if you think you know a lot about birds, nature, and wildlife, we hope that you will learn something new and have fun doing it. There will also be small prizes for the top-scoring participants! Given that this is the first event of this nature being hosted by NextGen, we will be informal in our approach to how you participate. Once you arrive, feel free to form small groups - you don't need to form groups ahead of time. The trivia will begin at 7:15PM sharp, after everyone has had a chance to settle in, and we will wrap things up by 8:45PM to allow for final score tallying, tiebreakers, and prizes. Even if you do not want to participate in the trivia, this could be a good opportunity to socialize and network with like-minded individuals who appreciate nature and knowledge. We will have snacks and beverages available - feel free to bring your own snacks as well. At the end of the event, we will announce upcoming NextGen and NVBA events - we encourage everybody who comes out to continue being involved with our bird walks and other events! Please come to the front door of the building and follow instructions posted on the door to contact somebody who will let you into the building and direct you to the location of the event. Any updates to this event will be sent as an email/notification to people who have RSVP'd "Yes."
